Comic Con 2014

Alright! So, I am a volunteer at the Salt Lake Comic Cons and Fan X. I've worked every convention and have worked my way up the ranks. This year I was a special duty Captain. I worked with the people who planned the convention to make things go smoothly. It was a very cool job and I met some very cool people. I have friends all over the convention who do cool things and help out the convention.  I am friends with the people who built the Tardis so it is my go to place when meeting up with the people I know.  I know the people who help plan the convention and it's activities as well, they are all very nice and passionate about their job. We all have a lot of fun as we run the convention. They asked me to help out as a Captain again next con. It's going to be awesome!

My job has a lot of perks besides helping the convention run. I get to meet a lot of really cool people like the celebs and special guests that attend.  This year I was lucky enough to meet Cary Elwes. I escorted him from his panel to his booth. He was a very nice guy! As you wish!

Making the Villains

Okay! I'm going to talk about my experience with painting the giant Hobbit villains for the Megaplex Theater!
I had told my boss at the theater one day that I was an art major.  He told me that the theater hosts events for big movies.  I said that I would love to help out with them if he needed it.  That's how my experience with painting for the theater started. Aaron, the events manager, signed me up for the Wreck it Ralph Kids Party where there was trivia, crafts, bounce houses, video games, and... face painting!!! He asked me to paint faces during the party so I painted hundreds of little characters on wiggly kids faces for eight hours. It was actually really fun! Aaron liked my little paintings so he put me on more events.

A year later Aaron decided to test my skills.  The Hobbit was coming in December and he wanted someone to paint the mighty Smaug for The Hobbit Midnight Event. A co-worker and I said we were up for the job.  The girl and I tried and tried to get together to start the painting but I had a difficult time getting in contact with her.  Time went by quickly and I decided I couldn't wait for her to reply any longer.  It was finals time and I was stressed for time.  I had only two days that I knew I could make it in to paint (I was painting at the theater) around finals before the event (I know, it was really bad planning...)  I had never done anything large scale before and I had no idea how long it would take me to finish.

There was a lovely maintenance worker who helped me out a ton though.  His name was Sam and he dragged the heavy 6X4' OSB plywood upstairs for me and helped me get the black background layers on.  It was extremely nice of him to help me out and it really brought my stress down a ton to have him help me start the piece. Once the black background had dried I got out my paints. Sam had bought me some house paint from the store in the colors I had asked for.  I didn't really know how well wall paint would work for this type of thing either.  It turned out to be pretty different than the acrylics I was used to. It didn't mix the same, or as well, but once I got used to it I actually found it really fun to work with.

There hadn't been any concept art released for Smaug when I'd began my painting so my artistic interpretation was all I had to go off.

The Process:

I grabbed a few reference pictures, collected the supplies I needed and started working. At first I had no idea where to start. I drew a ghost outline to get the scale right. Sam came if a few times and probably thought I was crazy as the only thing I had down for awhile was either a strange, messed up outline or a big red spot that looked like a dragon stamp.

From the red dragon stamp I started painting the outlines of the details in yellow. After the details were in it was easy to fill the rest in with colors and shading.

Keeping the scale of the painting correct was very difficult since it was very large and I couldn't step back to look at it until it was dry and could be stood up. My painting process involved a lot of jogging around the canvas to where I needed to touch things up.

Once I'd finished everything I looked at it for a long time with a feeling that there was something important missing. It took me a long time before I realized I'd forgotten to add wings!!! I had grounded the mighty dragon with wings like hurricanes!!! Since everything was already finished and the placement wasn't ideal the wings took the sidelines and hid in the background. Forgetting them completely would have been worse so I learned to like them.

This project was so fun and I realized that large scale paintings were kind of my thing (I would have never guessed this on my own). The next year I was asked to do the other four paintings. I took a time lapse video of my Azog painting. That'll be in another post along with my other adventures with this painting!! Thanks for reading!

The Greatest Fan of Middle Earth!

dennys_hobbit_facebook-post-option-a16

So, on September 30th of 2013 Denny's announced that they were having a contest to find Middle Earth's greatest fan!!! The winner was able to go see the World Premiere of "The Desolation of Smaug". I was super excited about this because I had an awesome Hobbit themed project planned already and it would tie in nicely to this contest. You can see my blog post about that project here.

For this contest we were asked to upload a one-minute video demonstrating why we should be named Middle-earth’s greatest fan. These videos were put onto youtube.

The project I was working on involved painting 5 large scale paintings of Hobbit villains, including Smaug the Stupendous! I decided to film myself painting these and use some of the footage in my one minute film.

Now, I'm no videographer and I really was not expecting to win this contest but I loved the idea and I knew I had some cool stuff to put in the film.  Since I'm no good an videography my video had... no sound. Yeah, I know that sounds pretty lame but we couldn't put any music that wasn't our own into the video so there was really nothing I could do. Though I had many difficulties putting my short little film together I was happy with how it turned out and I thought I would share it. You can enjoy my little film below!

I don't particularly like the term "Greatest Fan" because I think every fan has their own way of being the greatest in their fandom. I'd just like to say that I am a fan and I love doing things like this to show it!

And to anyone who wants more fun videos (and laughs) from the contest this was one of my favorites: Hobbit in a Song. They were semi-finalists. I honestly couldn't remember who the winner of the contest was though! There were some really good ones out there though!

Hobbit Stuff

OK, so the Megaplex Theater asked me to do some paintings for them for The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug movie premiere party.  I was super excited for it! I painted five Hobbit bad guys on OSB plywood with wall paint.  It took 6-8 hours for each one. It was really worth it! ;D

When I finished them all I had my Step Dad photograph them. I applied for Hobbit Fan of the Month and I WON! It was announced on January 24th which was my birthday! Talk about an awesome birthday present. I got a lot of really nice comments and feedback from everyone. It was a really neat experience!

For anyone who would like to see the little fan video I made for a contest it has some video footage of the painting process. The Hobbit Fan

Who's Here for Dr. Who?

So a friend of mine said, "Watch Dr. Who!" and I stared, baffled, at the screen thinking what is this? Then I ended up watching the whole series. I caught up just yesterday. I'd wanted to catch up before the 50th anniversary and I made it with a month to spare (I'm not quite sure this is something to be very proud of)! I've not watched any of the older series yet, I plan to someday; I started with the ninth doctor but let me just say, my fellow Whovians, that I absolutely loved every minute of what I've watched so far! (kind of spoilers ahead for people who know absolutely nothing about the show)

How Many Eccleston Fans out there!!!

How Many Tennant Fans out there!!!

How Many Smith Fans out there!!!

I'd just like to say that I think Matt Smith is my favorite regeneration over all.  It's hard to say that though because I love them all as The Doctor! I honestly don't know why Eccleston isn't as popular as the other two because I though he was absolutely FANTASTIC! He, for me, is pretty well tied with Tennant.  But, regenerations aside, this show is amazing and beautiful and emotional! I'm awaiting the 50th Anniversary with much anticipation!

Time to Talk Comic Con!

Really late post but YAY! The first ever Salt Lake Comic Con 2013 was a blast! I was able to geek out to my hearts content. On the very first day I came as a volunteer. They gave me a neon green "crew" shirt and a badge and sent me to the Stages of the Salt Palace.  Since I was a volunteer whenever a panel with a big celeb started I was able to sit in the front row with the press.  It was pretty awesome.  I know I'm not going to be able to get to all the comic con stuff I want so I'll be making multiple posts of it's awesomeness.

There were some awesome cosplayers who came to the con.  Cosplay Highlights. Let me just say there were some brilliant costumes and I was very impressed by how many people cosplayed, and cosplayed so wonderfully, for the first year of SLCC. There was a plethora of Dr. Who cosplays.  Maybe I just noticed this because I was helping with the Tardis. The Daily Herald asked to take a picture of my LOTR elf costume. It was pretty cool!

(Working with the Tardis was awesome though!  The line never seemed to end! My friends were exhausted from working the line all day and I felt kind of bad for them because they couldn't roam the con as freely.)

I don't know how many people were there to witness the Deadpool riot outside the Ballroom but it was EPIC.  They crowd-surfed Superman!
